Dogs have been productive members of society for thousands of years. According to the historical record, dogs were the first animal domesticated to serve and protect. Farmers worldwide still use herding and guardian dogs.

One breed, the Dalmatian, is a recognizable symbol associated with firefighters, despite the fact that they no longer serve in the capacity they once served. Domesticated dogs have found a new way to help those in need, however. Many people might not realize the fact that the canine community has added therapists to its list of careers.

Untrained, dogs gave emotional support to injured soldiers during World War II. Starting in the 1970s, the medical community noticed the benefits dogs provided to people with disabilities. Dogs were then officially trained to assist in therapy treatment programs.

Dogs’ roles in providing services for humans continue to grow. The health and wellness community specializing in addictions is now considering the use of therapy dogs. Given the history of dogs, using therapy dogs for a patient’s substance abuse treatment plan is not such a radical idea.

Substance abuse is a heavy topic, yet millions of Americans abuse addictive substances or have a loved one who does. An element of substance abuse that is often overlooked is mental illness. Mental health conditions are often known to accompany an addiction. The National Alliance on Mental Illness confirms that approximately 50 percent of individuals with severe mental health conditions also are coping with substance abuse problems.

Depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are among the most common illnesses associated with various addictions. The development of a substance abuse treatment plan requires psychological therapy treatments. The long history of the dog’s positive influence on humans is moving the push for therapy dogs as an additional resource for treating addictions.

According to a study on pets and health by the National Institutes of Health, pets increase the brain chemicals responsible for mood and behavior—serotonin and dopamine. Author Martin Kihn confirms how beneficial a dog could be for coping with an addiction. His biography, Bad Dog: A Love Story, covers his journey from alcoholism to sobriety with the help of Hola, his rambunctious Bernese Mountain Dog.

Here is a list of the top five breeds that could help aid in a substance abuse treatment plan for therapy or just to bring a smile to your face:

#5 Yorkshire Terrier

This is one of the many small dog breeds that hails from England. Their overwhelming confidence and intelligent nature make up for their small stature. The Yorkies’ desire for love and attention is perfect for anyone who is looking for a purpose in their everyday life.

#4 Beagle

Beagles are considered to be hound dogs. Humans have long valued this breed for its assistance in hunting the hare and other animals. But Beagles also make good pets for families and single people. The breed is adventurous and full of energy. Other endearing qualities of the breed include gentleness and an even temperament.

#3 Golden Retriever

The Golden Retriever is among the most patient of dog breeds. They are a very common breed used as service dogs for people with disabilities. People fall in love with their friendly demeanor and they’re easy to train.

#2 German Shepherd

Police departments and the armed forces have no problem putting their faith in this breed as partners. German Shepherds are respected for their loyalty, bravery, and emotional intelligence.

#1 Labrador Retriever

Compared to Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers have a stronger sense of smell and are lower maintenance due to their shorter coats. But Labradors are much like Golden Retrievers. Labs are highly intelligent, loyal, gentle, and easy to train. And most of all, they love human companionship. All their characteristics make them effective therapy dogs.

Owning a dog can be very rewarding, but it does come with responsibilities. All breeds require exercise, care, and proper nutrition. Be sure you have the tools and time for keeping your therapy dog happy and healthy so that they can keep you healthy and happy in return.
